The station terminated analog operations on June 12, 2009. Questions 7(b) and 7(c) are no longer applicable.
Below is a list of other activities and special projects KFSM-TV is involved in; PSAs concerning kids that ran on KFSM-TV; a list of schools and other organizations visited by KFSM-TV employees; and some of the news stories that aired during our local newscasts in the 4th quarter of 2009.
KFSM-TV is involved in several special projects including:
5NEWS In School - A program where KFSM invites area schools to sign up through our website to have 5 NEWS (KFSM) employees visit their school and talk to students about a career in broadcasting, weather, severe weather safety, etc.
KFSM participates in the Partners in Education (PIE) program which establishes mutually beneficial relationships between businesses and schools. Over 100 local companies and businesses partner with area schools to mentor, provide services, equipment or whatever may assist in the educational goals of a particular school. KFSM is a Partner in Education to Darby Jr. High School in Fort Smith. KFSM donates used printer toner cartridges to Darby and they use the money to purchase equipment for the school (such as copiers, toner cartridges, etc.) and for educational field trips. We also provide emcees and judges for various school activities throughout the year. KFSM has also teamed up with Darby Jr. High School on a special project. Equipment was set up between Darby and the Channel 5 studio that allows Darby students to make their school announcements live from the news set in our studio, send the video to the school, and have it shown live in the classroom. The students start with the Pledge of Allegiance and then go into school announcements. Students have the opportunity to observe the process for two weeks and then take two weeks anchoring the announcements. Students rotate out every two weeks giving a larger number of students the opportunity to see how television works. The project started with students from the Journalism class and continued to other classes.
The Student of the Month program is sponsored by KFSM along with Ozarks Electric Cooperative, Hot Mix 101.9, and The Morning News. This project was started to honor students in the Ozarks Electric Service area, primarily Northwest Arkansas, who demonstrate good citizenship, have helped other students, have overcome difficult personal circumstances or done something special or heroic in the community. The program begins in September and continues through May, awarding eight Student of the Month recipients and one Student of the Year. Each month, KFSM highlights the winning student in our newscasts.
In September, KFSM began airing special public service announcements called Homework First which encourage kids to do their homework before they watch TV or play games. It also reminds parents of their critical role in encouraging and supporting kids with their homework and the importance of these skills in their future.
Backpack Buddies - KFSM teams up with Community Services Clearinghouse, Inc., to bring balanced meals to local kids through the Backpack Buddies program. The Clearinghouse supplies area residents with Meals for Kids food list so they can purchase individually sized packages of the suggested foods and donate them to the Clearinghouse who then provides the items to area kids who otherwise would not have enough to eat. KFSM helps Clearinghouse with various projects throughout the year.
Van Comer, President and General Manager of KFSM, serves on the Sebastian County United Way Board of Directors. The United Way is one of the broadest community organization boards that supports nearly 30 non-profit service centers (a number of which deal with kids) in the Fort Smith area through fundraising efforts.
Van Comer is on the board of the Young Emerging Leaders of the Greater Fort Smith Region (YEL) and also attends the monthly luncheon. YEL Fort Smith seeks to provide an outlet for professional and personal networking, and development among the emerging professional demographic in the Fort Smith area. The members represent a unified and credible voice for young professionals on community issues that emphasize quality of place opportunities that make Fort Smith unique. YEL Fort Smith connects the younger, emerging leaders with the seasoned business community to strengthen the resources available in our region.
