STEP OUT WALK TO STOP DIABETES; Stations KOMO TV, KUNS TV and Fisher Radio Seattle co-sponsored the Ameridan Diabetes Association Stop Out Walk to Stop Diabetes for the second year and helped the organization raise $250,000. The organization saw an increase in the number of participants - many of them high school kids and younger. WALK LIKE MADD; KOMO TV and Fisher Radio Settle also co-sponsored MADD of Washington State's first annual "Walk Like MADD" October 29 at Green Lake. Many walkers were families with children who lost siblings due to crashes caused by drunk driving. LUCAS FILMS BRINGS TUSKEGEE AIRMEN HISTORY TO NAS; Weathercaster Steve Pool emceed the premiere of the new Lucas Films movie "Red Tails" at Naval Station Whidbey. The film tells the story of the all black flight unit that fought in WW II. A group of the actual Tuskegee Airmen and a few actors who portrayed them also made the trip. An integral part of the event was the group of 400 students who were inspired by Steve's message to study hard and stay focused. MIRACLE SEASON RINGS IN; This year's Children's Hospital "Miracle Season" holiday special (telethon) generated $145,000 in pledges and sponsorships, with $103,000 going to help establish the new Kathi Goertzen Endowment for Pediatric Brain Tumor Research - including a $5,000 gift from Fisher Communications/KOMO 4. Kathi is a longtime beloved KOMO TV anchor/reporter who hosted this telethon for many years. TOY DRIVE RESULTS: This year's Problem Solvers Toy Drive was a success leaving beneficiary Salvation Army very pleased with 20,000 toys and $55,600 cash. Donations included 62 bikes from REI.
