Program: Children First Special - Mentoring Matters Origination: Network - Aired 03/10/2001 1:00-1:30 PM ET Length: 30 Minutes Target Age: 10 to 16 Years Old In this half hour special on "Mentoring Matters" a nationwide study shows that young people who have mentors are 52% less likely to skip school, 46% less likely to start using drugs and 33% less likely to hit someone. Chris Cuomo of ABC News explores this phenomenon. First a visit at Wichita, Kansas where law enforcement officIals are working with delinquent kids; Sarasota, Florida where teens are changing stereotypes by mentoring elementary children. Next we discover that increased hours in the workplace has served to promote rather than deplete the mentoring pool, such as in a large New York City Bank where executives are regularly taking time to put children first. Next a visit to Atlanta, Georgia, where one man's struggles with homelessness and gang life taught him to overcome adversity. Today's he is teaching others to do the same. Children First is a call to action which is intended to inspire members of the community to make a difference in the lives of children around them in a manner which is positive, and will be beneficial to society as a whole.
