City Guys was produced in coordination with an educational consultant, focusing on the learning process of teenagers about the realities of life and that actions have consequences. The show follows the encounters and problem-solving of five teenagers, and the guiding hand of their understanding but tough principal, through eventful school years at a Manhattan high school. The cast is ethnically diverse. In each episode the cast starts at one level of knowledge and understanding. By the end of the episode they have moved to another level of understanding and decision making skills. The message is always integral to the plot and present throughout the episode.

The educational objective of this program is to guide teens with the knowledge of an accomplished and successful adult in the world of sports. Important issues facing kids are addressed, such as competition, value of physical fitness, violence, value of education, drug abuse, etc. The show provides a model to inspire children to meet and overcome challenges in their own lives. The program covers news and events, as well as question-and-answer sessions between teens and their favorite athletes from a wide variety of professional and amateur sports, who participate and respond to their questions covering a wide range of topics, i.e., attitude, work ethic, physical fitness, education, tolerance, conflict resolution, and cooperation. Kids Talk Sports seeks to stimulate thought while highlighting the successful ideas and practices of role models in sports.

The program portrays the positive outcomes that result from dedication, hard work, self-discipline, teamwork, practice and personal responsibilities. Re: #3 response above: KCPQ inadvertently did not air an educational/informational icon at the beginning of (only)"Kids Talk Sports" during the first quarter of 2002--the program is no longer being telecast. CITY GUYS regular schedule change from 4pm to 9am weekdays eff. 3/11/02 was highly promoted on air and in print during the week before the change occurred. A list of public service announcements relating to children that KCPQ aired during this quarter and detailed synopses on core programs can be found in the FCC 398 1st Qtr 2002 file.
