The TNBC line-up was pre-empted by Wimbledon Tennis Championships on July 6, 2002 and Ryder Cup Golf on September 28, 2002 On Tuesday, September 10, 2002 winners of the Telemundo annual essay contest honoring Hispanic Heritage Month were recognized at a gala reception at NBC4. This is the fourth year of the contest and the third year the stations have poled their resources to ccreat this event to both support students and to mark Hispanic Heritage Month. Area high school students of Latin American descent were invited to write a 1000 word composition on the theme "Being Latino in the U.S. Is the Best of Both Worlds." The focus of the contest is education; the goal is to motivate young American Latinos to learn about and celebrate the richness of their bicultural background. During the Third Quarter of 2002 WRC broadcast the following programs with described audio: City Guys, Just Deal, Skate and All About Us. Described Audio or Video Description is intended to enchance the television viewing experience of the blind and visually impaired. "Working 4 Children" is an umbrella campaign that focuses on activities, programs and efforts of all kinds, which uplift children and positively impact their lives. 4-WINDS created by NEWS4's Chief Meteorologist Bob Ryan, gives school children a hands-on introduction to meteorology and supports their study of geography, math and other subjects. NEWS4's meteorologists use the students' work during weathercasts, giving the schools credit on the air. 306 schools are now a part of the 4-WINDS network, the largest such outreach in the country. NBC4 Employees and NEWS4 talent participate in the enrichment of children throughout the year by participating in school workshops, career days and speaking engagements in area schools throughout the metropolitan area.
