Describe the educational and informational objective of the program and how it meets the definition of Core Programming
Program follows the development of 14-year-old Scout Lauer, whose divorced parents have to quickly move Scout from her father's home in New York City to her mother's home on a game reserve in South Africa. The overarching goal of the series is for our main character, Scout, to model a learning process for the audience that charts her socio-emotional growth as she adjusts to a completely new life in South Africa. By the end of each episode, Scout will have moved from one level of knowledge to a higher level of knowledge or insight. Specific objectives are to show how Scout makes a good transition into her blended family with a stepfather and new brother, makes new friends in a completely different system, understands different religious and cultural belief systems, and defines a place for herself where she feels secure and confident about her future. As the first children's show actually filmed on location in an African animal reserve, "Scout's Safari" will expose the audience to factually accurate content about threats to the natural environment and preserving animal species in their natural habitats.

WOOD TV8 Second Quarter April-June 2004 Read to Me West Michigan April 1 – Current, 2004 WOOD TV8 continued its ongoing commitment to literacy by again joining forces with 10 Intermediate School Districts and several business and community partners to continue the program to encourage adults to read to children under five daily. In the 2003 campaign, the program raised funds to buy nearly 7,000 books to be distributed to families with children between the ages of 0 and 5. It was developed as a direct response to Governor Jennifer Granholm’s plea to Intermediate School Districts to promote early reading during her State of The State Address at the beginning of 2003. The 2004 campaign goal is to raise enough money to buy books for 15,000 children. WOOD TV8 produced a campaign of promotional spots, public service announcements, news stories, online information highlighting the importance of reading to children beginning at birth. WOOD TV8's Maranda, Education Reporter Kristi Andersen, and Communications Director Eva Aguirre Cooper are liaisons of information about reading for children of all ages and for adults as well. Connect! Special with Child and Family Life Reporter Maranda and Reporter Larry Nienhaus Monthly, April-June, 2004 Each month, 24 Hour News 8 airs an in-depth special on issues related to children and teenagers. Many West Michigan businesses have had to lay off employees in the last year, and this segment was aimed at educating kids about how to handle unemployment (if parents are laid off, etc.) and why saving your money is important. A topic addressed in May was teenage drinking. The segment explained the dangers of drinking and how to deal with peer pressure related to this topic. In June, Maranda and Larry Nienhaus focused on the impact of media on kids. They explored the dangers and the benefits of media. Children’s Miracle Network Telethon June 5 & 6, 2004 WOOD TV8 broadcast a ten-hour telethon benefit program which aired live from the DeVos Children’s Hospital in downtown Grand Rapids.
