Weather Plus U., a program available on the Station's digital multicast NBC Weather Plus channel, offers teenagers a closer look at the weather and earth sciences and how they can and do affect their lives. The segments include regular features like Weather in the News, Weather Plus on Location, Weather Plus Experiments, Weather Plus in the Classroom and Weather Plus Interacts. Together, the segments highlight how and why the weather changes and how forecasters try to predict the weather, the nature and scope of significant weather events, and how teens can better understand or react to weather, both in their hometown and around the world.
The 2/24/2007, 2/25/2007, 4/14/2007 & 4/15/2007 children's programming on WeatherPlus Digital Multicast were preempted (a total of 12, 30 minute programs were preempted) due to breaking news. In both cases (weekends) severe weather occured.

Describe the educational and informational objective of the program and how it meets the definition of Core Programming

Sabrina half witch, half human. Parallel to her normal life, Sabrina leads a secret life, one in which she struggles with courses in witchcraft, with witch-world extra curricular activities, and with the mysteries of how to be a good witch. When other kids are in social studies or math classes, Sabrina may be in the basement, studying potions or witchcraft ethics. When other kids struggle with how they can make up for a bad grade or a bad day, Sabrina struggles with whether or not to use forbidden magic to fix things like bad grades or a bad day.
As she struggles to understand both her human and witchly sides, Sabrina serves as an idea role model for 8 to 12-year-olds. She has conflicts and problems; she is self-assured and very uncertain. She meets the world with a positive attitude, a can-do kind of spirit, and all of the uncertainty that characterizes the pre-teen world. She wants to fit in, but she is different and she treasures that difference. She wants to do things the right way, but sometimes is tempted by the easy way. She wants to be a good student, a good friend, a good person, but like most kids her age, she sometimes stumbles. Fortunately, Sabrina is the kind of self-reliant, competent, and positive pre-teen who is open to learning from her mistakes with the help of family, friends, teachers, and last but far from least, Salem. Surrounded, supported, and guided by attractive characters, Sabrina is an ideal role model to help middle childhood viewers understand many of the social issues and character traits they confront in their day-to-day lives. The issues are presented concretely; solutions and alternatives are portrayed in terms that make sense to 8 to 12-year-olds. And as Sabrina learns, so too do viewers. In short, Sabrina's Secret Life is a prime example of how entertainment and pro-social education can be combined.

Inspector Gadget's Field Trip produced in cooperation with the National Education Association (NEA), exposes young viewers to some of the most interesting geographical and historical sights in the world. It is designed not only to teach about the larger world in which today's kids live, but more important, it is designed to engage their interest and stimulate their desire to learn more. By exposing young kids to the colorful facts, quirks, and interesting legends and lore associated with the places they visit, each episode is designed to spark viewers' imagination to excite them with the idea of finding out more about their world. In short, the goal of Inspector Gadget's Field Trip is not only to teach kids about distant places, but to promote the belief that knowing about our complex world is both interesting and fun.

|
|
Each week Archie and the gang negotiate their way through yet another weird mystery. They encounter many of the same problems and issues confronting today's pre-teens: how to get along with others; how to build and maintain self-confidence; what kinds of values and behaviors lead to both self-respect and respect from others. Because Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, and their classmates are engaging characters with whom young viewers easily identify, they serve as excellent role models. As they deal with such pro-social issues as honesty, perseverance, dependability diversity, self-reliance, and self-respect, their struggles and what they finally learn provide young viewers with the kinds of life lessons that study after study indicates parents and teachers value.
