"Kid Cast" is a feature of the 5:00 p.m. news Monday through Friday in which children are urged to draw pictures depicting some type of weather condition, i.e. snow, rain, wind, sunshine, etd. and mail them to the station. Each day one picture is shown and the meteorologist mentions the child's name, age, hometown and the school he or she attends. The objective is to contribute to a child's awareness of weather conditions and the impact weather has on their daily lives.

Friday, April 6, 5:00-5:30 p.m. (1:00) Parents frustrated with teens who repeat dangerous activities and behaviors now have new information to consider. Michelle Franzen reported on new research suggesting the adolescent brain just isn't capable of avoiding risky behaviors. Tuesday, April 10, 5:00-5:30 p.m. & 6:00-6:30 p.m. (2:00) Some Texarkana High School students got a lesson on the consequences of drinking and driving. As prom time approaches, medical professionals wanted students to be safe, so today at First Baptist Church, Operation Prom Night was presented. Reporter Shelli Briery was there and in this report she reminded viewers that this was a re-enactment because some of the video was extremely graphic. Officials said that Operation Prom Night would be made available to other organizations or schools who wanted to make an impression on students ahead of prom night. Tuesday, April 10, 5:00-5:30 p.m. (1:30) With more peer pressure to deal with, children often search for guidance to deal with it and a program called "Think First" is offering that guidance. Today at a local middle school, organizers spoke about the importance of life choices relating to guns, drugs and violence. In this report, Donna Cavanaugh, spokesperson for "Think First" said it's important to reach children in middle school because this is the age where they experiment and experience strong peer pressure. Thursday, April 12, 5:00-5:30 p.m. (1:30) April is Child Abuse Awareness Month and today in Texarkana there was a special ceremony to honor children of Miller and Bowie County. Reporter Shelli Briery was there and said the event also served as an attempt to raise public awareness of abuse and get help for victims. Tuesday, April 17, 5:00-5:30 p.m. (1:30) In this report, Kimberly Williams showed how one local school district was taking precautions to keep children safe. She said the Bossier Parish School District teamed up with the local Sheriff's office to put an emergency plan in place. It's called the Crisis Management directory and contains everything you would need if there was a threat in the school. Wednesday, April 18, 6:00-6:30 p.m. & 10:00-10:35 pm. (1:30) A local shelter was losing state funding and Maria Vallejo reported details on how that would affect Shreveport youth. The Johnny Gray Jones Shelter houses troubled children from the Bossier-Shreveport area and is located in Bossier. Shreveport youth would no longer be accepted at the shelter and the attorney for the facility said the city has not been able to come up with a plan on how they will provide money for the children the shelter takes in from Shreveport. Friday, April 20, 5:00-5:30 p.m. & 6:00-6:30 p.m. (1:30) To prevent teens from turning to a life of crime, local law agents teamed up to show the youth what it's really like to be in jail and prison. The program is called "They Just Don't Know" and was inspired by a local judge who appeared in this report and said the course would focuses on topics like possession of drugs, teen sex and addiction. It also includes a tour of the Caddo correctional Center where parents and teens can experience a day in the life of an inmate. Thursday, April 26, 10:00-10:35 p.m. (2:00) Rick Boone's special report, Sex, Lies and the Internet, included warnings from law officials urging parents to watch kids activity on line, and at the same time pointed out the fact that more parents are listing and stepping up to blocking predators from their children. This special report was the result of several local predators being arrested and several local teens being victims. Tuesday, May 1, 5:00-5:30 p.m. (1:30) In this Troubleshooter report, Alexis Wiley and Safe Kids Worldwide reminded parents that summer is the deadliest time of year for children. April 18 through May 6 was designated Safe Kids Week. Emergency workers refer to summer as "trauma season" and listed the five listed the five most common things that cause deaths in summer as drowning, injuries from biking, falls, automobile injuries and pedestrian injuries. Tuesday, May 1, 5:00-5:30 p.m. & 6:00-6:30 p.m. (1:30) Students and officials at Redwater High School were tested on their emergency response skills. Shelli Briery reported that these students dealt with the issue of "what to do if a gunman walked into the classroom to take you and your classmates hostage?" Local law enforcement, emergency management and the Red Cross were on hand for this mock drill. Wednesday, May 2, 5:00-5:30 p.m. (2:00) It was that time of year when teens are out of school and wondering how to fill their summer. Reporter Tiffany Wong quoted detectives as saying burglaries and thefts are at the top of the list when talking about summer crimes. She said property vandalism is a big problem, but authorities admitted that teens were experimenting more and more and taking more risks when it comes to committing crimes. Criminals were younger and crimes were more violent. Thursday, May 3, 5:00-5:30 p.m. & 6:00-6:30 p.m. (2:00) Jessica James reported live in the newsroom on the ways drug dealers are changing their methods of distribution to become more appealing for younger users. She said they are changing the appearance, the colors, even flavors of street drugs, hoping the new additives will make drugs more attractive to young kids. Lt. Kevin Dunn, Shreve-port Police Department, also commented on these new types of drugs they're seeing on the street. Monday, May 7, 6:00-6:30 p.m. (1:00) Some Texarkana 4th graders showed their pride in a local park and proved that teamwork goes a log way. College Hill Elementary 4th graders unveiled new park benches which were a part of their "Pride In Our Park" project. The year-long project of sprucing up Bobby Ferguson Park was something that civic leaders hoped would inspire others. Tuesday, May 15, 6:30-7:00 a.m. (2:00) Katrina Gilliam, director of the telecommunications magnet program at Booker T. Washington High School discussed this particular program. She said it's offered to every student in Caddo on grade level. She showed viewers the facility and explained that they have advanced equipment for students to train on. Friday, May 18, 5:00-5:30 p.m. (1:30) Alexis Wiley reported that identity thieves were putting even young children at risk. She said that identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America and teenagers are a key target group, She explained that efforts were underway to try and help young people learn the risks of what they do on line that could set them up to become victims. Friday, June 1, 6:00-6:30 p.m. (1:30) Shelli Briery reported that the Texarkana Independent School district is looking out for its students this summer. Five schools will be participating in the free lunch program for students 18 and under. Starting June 4 and continuing until July 27, these five schools will serve breakfast and lunch at no cost to the students. Monday, June 4, 6:00-6:30 p.m. (1:00) Kimberly Williams reported from the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Camp, an annual event hosted in conjunction with the Boy Scouts. Boys ages 9 through 13 are chosen to attend. They get to sleep in tents, learn new outdoor activities and camp songs and hone their leadership skills. This year, the Caddo Parish K-9 United and Mounted Patrol participated for some hands-on animal education. Friday, June 8, 5:00-5:30 p.m. (1:00) Heidi York reported that Louisiana teen drivers got a break from state lawmakers. The Louisiana Legislature rejected a bill that would have barred teen drivers from carrying more than one passenger under the age of 20. The bill failed by a near 2 to 1 margin. Opponents said the bill would in effect outlaw double-dating. Thursday, June 14, 5:00-5:30 p.m. (2:00) Shelli Briery reported that Texarkana, Texas I.S.D. was hosting a summer feeding program at five schools in the district where children 18 years and younger could eat breakfast and lunch each day free. Beth Carson, Director, T.I.S.D. Child Nutrition Programs said there was a need to bridge the gap between school meals and summer when food isn't as available for the students. She said breakfast is served at 8 a.m. and lunch at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 6:00-6:30 p.m. (1:30) There was an ongoing effort across the region to educate children on how to be safe around traffic. The Shreveport Police added to that effort today with a bicycle rodeo. In this report, Bobby Henderson, Neighborhood Coordinator for the Police Department,said they want to make sure kids are safe when crossing the street, looking both left and right, and walking their bikes across. Some 80 kids attended today and learned the importance of wearing helmets and following traffic signals. The Bicycle rodeo is part of Shreveport's Community Oriented Policing Program. Friday, June 22, 6:30-7:00 a.m. (2:00) Julie Bass, representing Goodwill Youth Service, was interviewed about the Youth Reintegration Program. This program is for youth who are returning to their community after being in a secure or non-secure facility. It will help them and their families navigate the many challenges they face.
